Workers shun NLC strike in Lagos, Ogun, other states

Civil servants failed to join the warning strike the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliates had declared in some states but protests held in others.

The labour unions had announced the two-day warning strike to protest petrol subsidy removal.

TheCornet gathered that the civil servants and banks in Lagos did not partake in the strike action. The protest also failed to hold in other states, such as Ogun, Delta, Sokoto, Katsina, Delta, , and Ogun.

The scenario was however different in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, where the strikers grounded commercial activities and disrupted electricity supply.

The Nigerian Government had announced palliatives to cushion the effect of the petrol subsidy removal, which saw transportation and commodity prices soar astronomically. The rising inflation in the Africa’s biggest economy worsens the economic hardship facing the citizens.

The Federal Government has provided loans of N5billion to each state and it equally released grains for distribution to citizens.

Some states have unfurled similar cushioning measures including reducing labour hours and slashing transportation cost as much as by fifty per cent in some cases.

The central government said it is hopeful that the subsidy removal policy, believed to be drain hole of its resources, would avail some benefits eventually.
