Falz, others mischievous about cocaine exhibit burning – NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has responded to critics faulting the burning of cocaine exhibit, done on Tuesday. Folarin Falana, a musician better known as Falz, is one of the critics who deplored the public destruction of the exhibits.

“This administration must really think that we are daft sha!!
What is this lamba that the NDLEA is giving with this cocaine seizure saga? Dem dey burn evidence?”, Falz tweeted to his 2.8 million followers.

Giving a clarification, Femi Babafemi, the spokesperson for the anti-narcotics agency, said that a court had backed the exercise. He described the opinions expressed by Falz and other critics as “fake news”.

“Claims and insinuations that @ndlea_nigeria has destroyed all drug exhibits recovered from the Ikorodu cocaine warehouse are false and misleading. Our statement on the public destruction clearly states that the order to destroy the seizure was issued by a Federal High Court Lagos,” Babafemi said.

He adds that “a portion of the drug seizure is secured for the purpose of prosecuting the suspects in court. As part of transparency and in line with legal procedures, the suspects were taken to the venue of public destruction to witness quantity destroyed and sign  certificate of destruction.

“In fact, 27.5kg of the cocaine has been secured for the purpose of prosecution. Those making unfounded claims obviously didn’t read our earlier statement or doing that out of mischief. Please disregard their falsehood.”

The NDLEA had stormed a warehouse located in a residential estate in the Ikorodu division of Lagos, where it seized the large cocaine consignment. The agency described the seizure, estimated to worth N194billion, as the largest in the history of the country’s anti-narcotic campaign.
