EXTRA: Harassed, suspended PDP turns around to celebrate Elumelu

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has made an about-face by given due recognition to Hon. Ndudi Elumelu as the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives.

TheCornet reports that in July 2019, Speaker, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila had announced Elumelu as the Minority Leader.

Equally, Gbajabiamila declared Toby Okechukwu as deputy minority leader; Gideon Gwani as minority whip; and Adesegun Adekoya as deputy minority whip.

The session suddenly became rowdy, due to the PDP’s preference for Hon. Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers) and others. Chinda was the choice of Rivers Governor Nyesome Wike.

The party subsequently suspended Elumelu and his three colleagues, but lifted the suspension in February 2021.

Despite, the party said it would continue to recognize the PDP caucus, led by Chinda.

However, the party made a volte-face on Wednesday, as the new Iyorchia Ayu-led PDP congratulated Elumelu on his birthday and called him, the “voice of the voiceless.”

“Over the years, Hon. Elumelu has distinguished himself as a humble leader, quintessential legislator and beloved representative of his people, having excelled in his mandate as a lawmaker as well as the Leader of the opposition in the 9th House of Representatives,” the PDP said.

“The PDP acknowledges Hon. Elumelu’s contributions, as a loyal party man, with other leaders of our Party to reposition the PDP in our mission to Rescue and Rebuild Nigeria from misrule. “
