  Ekweremadu’s sons witness father’s trial

ÂSenator Ike Ekweremadu reappeared at Uxbridge magistrate’s court in the United Kingdom in the presence of his two sons. The former deputy president of senate is facing charges of modern slavery. He is being accused of trafficking a 22-year-old Nigerian man to the UK to donate a kidney to his ailing daughter. The donor had claimed he was underaged, but pictures of his Nigerian pastor circulating the internet revealed his age as a 22-year-old.

UK authorities last Thursday arrested Ekweremadu, alongside his wife Beatrice. However, Beatrice urged the court to allow her appear with her husband during Thursday’s hearing into the case. She reportedly said she had not sighted her husband since their arrest.

Ekweremadu has since been remanded in custody as the court declares him an influential person, a flight risk and that the case involves a child and modern slavery.

Meanwhile, the president of senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan Wednesday announced that the Federal Government had hired lawyers to defend the Ekweremadus.

Lawan also announced that a delegation would meet with the Ekweremadus in London over the trial.
