Ekweremadu: UK court rules supposed kidney donor not minor

The Westminster Magistrate’s Court hearing the case of alleged organ harvesting involving Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, has declared the expected kidney donor David Ukpo is not a minor.

The UK authorities had accused the former president of the Senate of trafficking a minor (Ukpo) for the purpose of harvesting his organs.

But at Thursday’s hearing, counsels to the Ekweremadus Gavin Irwin and Szilvia Booker argued against the charge.

“We deny that there was exploitation or intent to do so.” Irwin said in his opening address to the court. He added the victim lied about his age, but the prosecution disagreed.

The court subsequently ruled that the victim is not a minor.

The Ekweremadus will now appear at the Central Criminal Court in London on August 4 for the continuation of the trial.

Meanwhile, a delegation from Nigeria witnessed the trial.

They are former Senate President David Mark, whom Ekweremadu worked with; former senate minority leader, Eyinnanya Abaribe; former Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba; and Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Adamu Bulkachuwa, were all in court.
