Developer of Banana Island collapsed building broke stop work seal -LASG

The Lagos state government has revealed the developer of the Wednesday collapsed building at Banana Island disregarded a stop work order on the building.

Gbenga Omotosho, the commissioner for information, said that he affected construction was sealed for lacking approval but “the developers continued to build, hiding under the security of their estate/gated community.”

He added that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had directed a general stop work order on ongoing constructions in the highbrow estate to enable “a comprehensive audit” by the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

The authorities equally said responders rescued 25 construction workers while the injured are receiving treatment for their wounds, but no one died from the incident.

Prof Akin Abayomi, the state commissioner of health, said that nine workers sustained “minor injuries”.

“The state government … will be responsible for the emergency treatment and care, including the medical bills of the victims on admission. It will also provide post-trauma counselling support and care for all victims through the Lagos Mental Health in Development programme – a free mental health counselling and support service provided by the ministry of health,” Abayomi stated.

The building allegedly collapsed after a cement-mixing truck rammed into it.
