Buhari’s inaction behind members’ failure to get return tickets – Reps

The House of Representatives Wednesday cited President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to assent to an amendment in the Electoral Act 2022 as the reason many lawmakers failed to get return tickets during recently-held party primaries.

The National Assembly had inserted into the electoral law a provision allowing statutory delegates to vote at party primaries.

But, President Buhari has refused to act on the amendment more than 30 days after it was transmitted to him for his assent.

Speaking during Wednesday plenary, Hon. Toby Okechukwu and Hon. Ben Igbakpa (both PDP members) blamed their losses on the Buhari’s inaction on the said amendment.

The duo, who failed to get their party’s return tickets, urged the parliament to take action.

In his response, the speaker, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, urged the lawmakers to bring the matter as a motion for debate.

“For us to override, I believe we require two-thirds majority and it cannot be by voice vote neither can it be by way of signatures unless, of course, you have enough two-thirds by signatures what I will suggest is that you bring the application – a formal motion on notice – perhaps tomorrow or whenever you are able to do that and we will determine whether or not this House is ready to override or not.

“I think that is the way to go. That is the proper procedure.

“You can file your motion and hopefully we will be able to list it tomorrow or whenever the calendar permits,” he said.
