Appeal Court acquits ex-gov. Lamido, son of N1.3bn fraud allegation

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has discharged and acquitted a former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, his son, and others facing prosecution for laundering N1.351 billion.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had re-arraigned the former governor before the federal high court. But, the defendants declined to present a defence and, rather, made a no-case submission.

The court, in response, rejected the defendants’ stance and ordered them to open their defence.

Dissatisfied, Lamido and other defendants appealed the ruling at the Court of Appeal.

Ruling on the appeal on Tuesday, Justice Adamu Waziri stated that the Federal High Court in Abuja lacked the requisite jurisdiction to try the case as most of the issues emanated from outside.

The 9-year-old money laundering suit against Lamido and sons

The EFCC first arraigned the former governor and his two sons in September 2016 on 43-count charges of conspiracy, abuse of office and money laundering valued at N1.351 billion.

Lamido’s sons charged along with him are Aminu and Mustapha; and equally his former aide, Wada Abubakar and four companies. The companies are Baimana Holdings Ltd, Bamaina Company Nigeria Ltd, Bamaina Aluminium Ltd, Speeds International Ltd., and Batholomew Darlington Agoha.
