University lecturers told to join NLC nationwide strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked its members to join the nationwide strike declared by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU president, told members in a letter he wrote to zonal branches of the union.

Osodeke said that ASUU, “as an affiliate of NLC, directs “all members of our union  to join this action of NLC to protect the interest of Nigerian workers and the leadership of the union.”

He noted that the government was yet to meet ASUU’s demands since calling off its own strike.

Other reason the union gave for joining the strike are “the rising cost of living and increasing hardship foisted on Nigerian masses since the unplanned deregulation of the prices of petroleum product and the unbridled devaluation of the naira.”.

The NLC is protesting the brutality meted on its president, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State. Ajaero was in the state to mobilise workers for a strike.
