18 Lagos-bound travellers die in road crash

A crash has claimed the lives of 18 travellers and 16 cows along Malisa village in Gwandu LGA of Kebbi state, the police said.

The dead and 42 others injured in the crash were aboard the ill-fated truck heading to Lagos state.

Nafi’u Abubakar, spokesperson of the Kebbi police command, confirmed the Sunday night incident in his statement, issued on Monday.

Abubakar said that the truck upended after its driver lost control of its steering wheel.

“On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ahmed Magaji-Kontagora, instantly rushed to the scene and evacuated the victims to General hospital Gwandu, for treatment.

“A medical doctor in the hospital confirmed 18 dead, while the remaining victims are currently responding to treatment.

The state’s police commissioner urged transport unions, such as the NURTW and NARTO to ensure their drivers “observe speed limit, avoid overloading, recklessness, and be more careful while driving.”

He also commiserated with bereaved families.
