Oyo assembly proceeds with Olaniyan’s impeachment

Rauf Olaniyan, the embattled deputy governor of Oyo state, will face impeachment, despite his appealing the court ruling that upheld the process.

Justice Ladiran Akintola of the Oyo state high court had in his ruling Thursday dismissed Olaniyan’s suit, aimed at stopping his removal. Dissatisfied, Olaniyan said he had filed a suit at the Court of Appeal against the ruling of the lower court.

Following the ruling, Oyo state chief judge Munta Abimbola decided to set up a panel to investigate allegations the state assembly levelled against Olaniyan.

Members of the panel are Chief Kayode Christopher (Chairman); Arc. Adebisi Soyombo; Chief Lawal Adekunle Dauda; Princess Olanike Olusegun; Rev Fr. Patrick Ademola; Chief Mrs Wuraola Adepoju (JP); and Alh. Tirimisiyu Akewusola Badmus.

Justice Abimbola described members of the panel as people of unquestionable integrity, not being members of any public service, legislative house or political parties. He urged them to have the fear of God and act in accordance with their conscience.

23 members of the house of assembly had signed on to the move to remove Olaniyan for gross misconduct, financial recklessness, insubordination, among other offences.
