Court orders ASUU to resume work
The National Industrial Court has directed striking university lecturers to resume work immediately. The aggrieved lecturers, under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has been on strike since February.
Justice Polycarp Hamman on Wednesday held that the strike was a breach of Section 18 (1)(2) of the Trade Disputes Act, which prohibit their action. Justice Hamman said the use of “shall” in the Act means it is mandatory that ASUU should not embark on strike pending the determination of the substantive suit before the court.
The judge also said the strike had done damage to the careers of many students. He however referred the suit to the president of the court for reassignment to another judge.
The lecturers are demanding, among other things, university revitalisation fund. They are also urging the federal government to honour agreement reached with it in time past. As a result of the break
