27 Pro-Wike lawmakers decamp to APC

The political crisis rocking the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new turn on Monday as 27 lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly decamped to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection is part of the fallouts of the disagreement between Governor Sim Fubara and his political godfather, Nyesom Wike.

Wike, a leader of the PDP has not officially pronounced his exit from the opposition party despite his serving as the minister of the federal capital in the ruling All Progressives Congress-led government.

The defectors had attempted to remove the governor from office but the plan backfired, leading to the burning of the assembly complex and the splitting of the assembly into two factions.

Hon. Martin Amaehwule, leading the majority of the lawmakers, clings to his office as speaker of the house of the assembly.

Amid the violence that greeted the botched impeachment, the majority leader Edison Ehie, with six legislators to his side, announced they had suspended the 27 lawmakers.

Ehie announced himself after being elected by the minority members.

Wike had accused Governor Fubara of working with his political foes to upstage him and snatch the political structure he created.

He also said that the governor, whom he installed, was ‘ungrateful’ that he got to his position on ‘a platter of gold.’

Despite Wike’s vexation, Governor Fubara seems to be growing into his own man as he takes actions believed to be hurting to his for

mer benefactor.
