Wike, others allied with Obasanjo against Atiku – Report

A report suggests that aggrieved Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and four other governors in his group are likely to adopt a presidential candidate favorable to former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Wike and four others – Governors Seyi Makinde, Samuel Ortom, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Okezie Ikpeazu –are currently meeting in London purportedly to adopt a presidential candidate.

The report by PUNCH claims that the aggrieved governors might adopt Labour Party’s standard-bearer Peter Obi, who is Obasanjo’s preferred candidate.

The governors, who are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had declared they would not support the party’s candidate Abubakar Atiku for the 2023 poll. The G-5 governors insist that Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman of the PDP, must resign his position, since he is a northerner as the party’s presidential candidate Atiku. According to them, the PDP constitution recognizes the rotation of party offices between the south and north, depending on which of the two zones produces the party’s presidential candidate.

The report said, “The former President had met with the governors in London in August where he reportedly lobbied for Obi.

“The governors are considering Obasanjo’s advice that the Presidency should come to the South in 2023. Obasanjo has advised them to support Obi because he believes that if the Presidency comes to the South, it should go to the South East.

However, it is not clear whether Governor Makinde would support Obi, having initially declared that he would align himself with a presidential candidate from the southwest. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu happens to be the only presidential candidate from the southwest zone.
