Why federal govt. re-introduced tolling – Fashola

Babatunde Fashola, Nigeria’s minister of works and housing, has said the reintroduced tolling policy would help government maintain the affected roads and construct new ones.

He explained that the affected roads represented 5,050km (14.3 per cent) of the entire 35,000km federal carriageway in the country.

Fashola also said that vehicles that will be plying the road would pay between N200 and N500 per trip, depending on their brand. Exempted from the toll charges are diplomatic, military, para-military, tricycles, and motorcycles.

“We have seen that most of those dual carriageways also have alternative roads, but they are single carriageways; that’s why we left them. So, the only exception to single carriageway are some bridges and they are listed in the regulation,” said the minister.

He added, “let me be clear, tolls are not going to start tomorrow.”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration cancelled tolling across the country in 2003.
