What FG must do to prevent fresh strike – ASUU President

Emmanuel Osodeke, the National President of the Academic Staff of Universities, (ASUU), has advised the Federal Government on how to fend off another strike by the teachers’ body.

The government says the CBN is delaying on disbursement to meet the conditions jointly agreed on with the union.

Both the Government and ASUU negotiated a truce in December 2020, ending its nine-month strike. ASUU’S demands include government allocating funds for the University Revitalisation Fund.

“The CBN and the ministry are the Federal Government. They showed us a document that the money is with the CBN.  What is difficult in transferring money from one CBN account to another CBN account? That means the document they showed us was fake”, Osodeke reportedly said.

“If  actually the ministry has written to the CBN, I don’t think the CBN will say they are not transferring the money. We are waiting for them. On the deadline, let’s wait till tomorrow,” he added.

The academic added that the Ministry of Education ought to have “convened a meeting of the bank’s monetary committee to allocate the money to the universities”.

The teachers’ body has said it would embark on a fresh strike after it holding a consultation with its members on Tuesday.
