Uzodima silent on gun attack in hometown

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodima has become taciturn several hours after armed men razed a divisional police headquarters in his hometown, Omuma.

The attack took place a year after a similar one on the police headquarters left the divisional police officer and four of his colleagues dead.

The armed men were said to have carried out the attack early Sunday morning, using dynamites.

Similarly, some armed men on Saturday razed a police station and shot two constables dead in the Umuguma area of the state. The attackers also reportedly set suspects detained in police custody free.

Also on Saturday, armed men set alight the country home of Professor George Obiozor, the President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, located at Awo-Omanma.

The leader of the pan-Igbo cultural association has yet to speak on the attack.

The police have confirmed the Saturday attack on the police station and claimed four of the attackers were killed.

Micheal Abattam, spokesperson for the Imo police command, said four of the attackers were killed while others escaped with gunshot wounds.

Abattam, a Chief Superintendent of Police said the attackers were “suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra/Eastern Security Network terrorist group”.

He also said they came in their numbers, “but were swiftly repelled by the ever gallant and combat-ready Imo Police Command’s tactical teams and operatives of the DSS.”

Abattam added that five undetonated explosives were recovered at the scene of the attack.
