Trigger-happy policeman detained for killing unharmed man
The Federal Capital Territory command of the Nigeria Police Force says it has arrested the policeman, who ‘accidentally’ shot an unharmed citizen, Onyebuchi Anene.
Report has that Anene was involved in a minor accident with a motorcycle rider and its passenger. It also said that Anene resolved the issue with the party and they left. But, before he could leave the scene, some police officers got to the scene and asked him to go with them to the station. Anene refused, leading to an altercation between him and the law enforcement officers. Suddenly, a gunshot from one of the police officers hit Anene at close range. He succumbed to his injury eventually.
Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the command, said the commissioner for the FCT, Benneth C. Igweh, psc, mni, had ordered an investigation into the killing.
The police also called the shooting “an accidental discharge”.
“While the police officer responsible for the accidental discharge is in custody, the CP expresses profound and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the public at large,” she said in a statement. The police also assured “the public of swift justice” and promised to communicate “further development.”
