TikToker jailed for insulting Museveni

A Ugandan TikToker Edward Awebua has been sentenced to six years imprisonment for insulting President Ywoeri Museveni. Magistrate Stella Maris Amabilis said in her ruling that “the accused deserves a punishment which will enable him learn from his past, so that next time he will respect the person of the president, the first lady and the first son.”

BBC reports that rights groups regularly denounce Ugandan authorities for violations of human rights and freedom of expression.

President Museveni has been in power since 1986. In 2022, he signed a gag law, which many rights groups have criticized as suppressing freedom of speech online.

Last year, the constitutional court ruled that a section of the act that penalised “offensive communication” was unconstitutional.
