Governors to Buhari: Don’t sanction ASUU

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) has advised President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government not to sanction members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Rather the body urge the government to resolve the contentious issues between it and the lecturers’ body.

The governors also rejected the government’s plan to privatise National Integrated Power Plants (NIPPs). The plants comprise Benin Generation Company Ltd, Calabar Generation Company Ltd, Geregu Generation Company Ltd, Olorunsogo Generation Company Ltd and Omotosho Generation Company Ltd.

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, the outgoing NGF chairman, said states who hold equity shares in the plants were not carried along in the plan.

“We examined the issues relating to the proposed privatisation of the power project and we took a decision that at this point in time, the NGF is opposed to the sale of any of the plants until appropriate steps have been taken that would take into consideration the interest of states that are also equity holders in those plants,” he said.
