We will not allow disturbances in Lagos, police declare following Ojota killing

Benjamin Hundeyin, the public relations officer for Lagos Police Command, has warned that any breach of peace would not be tolerated in the state.

He was reacting to the early morning disturbance by self-determination groups at the Ojota area of the metropolis, leading to the death of one person.

He said, “In the early hours of today, miscreants masquerading as Yoruba Nation agitators came out in their hundreds, disrupting social and commercial activities at Ojota area of the State.

“A team of police officers, comprising Alausa Division and the Raid Respond Squad (RRS) promptly stepped in to disperse the unlawful gathering and prevent a breakdown of law and order. The miscreants attacked the police, shooting, and destroyed two vehicles in the process.

“One person has been confirmed dead, while two police officers shot by the miscreants are currently receiving treatment. Four suspects have been arrested and investigations have commenced.”

Hundeyin added “several pump-action-rifle-wielding miscreants” shot at RRS officers and patrol vehicles, without saying whether the police operatives returned fire.

Hundeyin said “normalcy had returned to the area and enjoined the citizens to go about their lawful businesses.

“It is imperative to state unequivocally that the Lagos State Police Command will not allow any person or group of persons, under whatever guise, disrupt the peace currently enjoyed in the State,” he said.

TheCornet had earlier reported social media claims that the fatal incident was the result of a clash between Yoruba Nation agitators and the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC).

But Gani Adams, the leader of OPC denied his members were involved in the disturbances.

Adams, who holds the ceremonial title of the Yoruba generalissimo (aare ona kakanfo), backed the agitation and said that “the struggle for the liberation of the Yoruba race is an inalienable right” of the agitators.
