INEC to PDP, LP: Go to court

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has asked aggrieved political parties to approach the court to state their grievances.

In a statement, INEC said that calls for the cancellation of the presidential poll and resignation of INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, by the Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party is “misplaced”. INEC equally said that PDP Dino Melaye’s claim that “the INEC chairman allocated scores to parties is unfounded and irresponsible. ”

The electoral umpires add that “contrary to the insinuation by both parties, results from the states point to a free, fair, and credible process. ”

The body reminded the parties that the legal processes for redress on outcomes of elections “did not include calling for INEC chairman to resign or for the election to be cancelled.”

“Aggrieved parties are free to approach the court to ventilate their concerns and wait for the matter to be resolved, ” the INEC said.

Some opposition parties including the ADC have rejected the results of the presidential election, citing vote fraud. Bola Tinubu, a two-time governor of Lagos State is leading the race as shown in the results so far declared.

He is trailed by Abubakar Atiku, Nigeria’s former vice president, and Peter Obi, taking the third position based on the collated results.
