Sanwo-Olu celebrates late Herbert Wigwe posthumous birthday

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos state, has celebrated 58th posthumous birthday of late Herbert Wigwe. Wigwe, his son, wife, and business partner had died in a tragic air crash that occurred on 9 February 2024 near Nipton, California.

Sanwo-Olu writes in a post on X (formerly Twitter): “Today would have been Herbert’s 58th birthday, and we would have shared a laugh together. The pain of his loss is still so raw, but today, I choose to remember the man who was more than a brother and friend to me. Herbert’s wisdom, vision, and unwavering belief in Nigeria remain etched in our hearts.

He continues: “We miss you deeply, my brother. He was not just a leader; he was a beacon of hope and a visionary inspiring many. We honor his legacy of progress, integrity, and love for our country. As we remember Herbert today, let us celebrate the incredible life he lived. Rest in peace, my dear brother. Your spirit lives on in every heart you touched.”

Until his death, Wigwe was chief executive officer of Access Bank Plc. A 1987 graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Wigwe started his career at Coopers & Lybrand. He moved from there to join Guaranty Trust Bank, rising to the position of executive director, before he resigned to set up Access Bank.
