Tinubu challenged over editor’s ‘detention’

The International Press Institute, IPI, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to uphold the constitution he swore to, following the ‘detention’ of a journalist, Segun Olatunji.

Report has that some strangers abducted Olatunji from his Abule Egba, Lagos home and his whereabouts has since remained unknown. Olatunji edits ‘FirstNews’ and his colleagues believe that his sudden disappearance is linked to a story published by his media outlet.

In their joint statement, president of the global journalist network (IPI), Isikilu Mojeed and Tobi Soniyi, stated that “the continued detention of Mr Olatunji under whatever guise is a gross violation of his fundamental human rights under the Nigerian constitution.”

The group affirmed Olatunji’s right to personal liberty and the need to prosecute him in a court, if he had actually committed an offence

The group added that none of the security agencies it contacted owned up  to Olatunji’s arrest.

IPI, therefore, urges President Bola Tinubu “to uphold the constitution”, as he had promised to do “in his inaugural speech”.

“IPI Nigeria is now calling on the president to uphold the constitution,” the IPI leaders said in their statement.
