Protests in Ondo, Ogun over naira scarcity as Buhari summons Emefiele, others

Protests broke out in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state, and in Ondo state over the lingering naira scarcity.

In Ogun, the protesters reportedly attempted to burn down a bank. The same scenario replicated itself in Ondo, where residents protested over the cash squeeze.

The controversial naira redesign has made it impossible for depositors to make cash withdrawals at both banking halls and ATM points, thereby fuelling the anger and frustration from members of the public.

At the same time, President Muhammadu Buhari summoned the controversial Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) chief Godwin Emefiele for a meeting over the same issue.

Equally present at the meeting, which took place in Aso Rock, was the chairman, Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) Aminu Tambuwal; the chairman, Progressives Governors Forum Atiku Bagudu; and chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Abdulrasheed Bawa.

The CBN has said it would not shift the February 10 deadline given to Nigerians to swap old notes for newly redesigned ones.

While the opposition have hailed the policy, governors and members of the ruling party alleged that it is a sinister plot by Emefiele aimed at scuttling the presidential election.

On Tuesday, five miniscule opposition parties got a court injunction to stop President Buhari, the CBN, and all commercial banks in the country from shifting the deadline.
