Protesting varsity students block Akure-Ilesha highway

University students protesting the ongoing lecturers’ strike have mounted blockade on the busy Akure/Ilesha highway. The highway is a major transit route for many road users.

The students’ action followed a threat by the National Association of Nigeria Students, NANS, to block major highways in protest to the strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The protesters, who are said to be undergraduates of tertiary institutions in Ondo State.

The blockade of the highway left many road users stranded and led to their taking alternative routes.

TheCornet reports that the meeting between NANS president, Abdulmajeed Oyeniyi and Education minister, Adamu Adamu ended in an impasse, with the latter walking out of the NANS team.

Esedere Abraham, the former Student Union President of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, said the demonstration would continue until ASUU calls off the strike.

The student union leader said students should not be made to suffer the dispute between ASUU and the federal government.

ASUU had declared a month warning strike to pressure government to accede to its demands.
