Protest against Sanusi’s installation sees poor crowd showing
A small crowd of protesters have shown up at the gates of the national assembly and the presidential villa over the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as Emir of Kano.
Abdullahi Saleh, the protest leader and coordinator of the Northern Nigeria Peace and Development Foundation, accused Kano state Governor Abba Yusuf of desperation to “rubbish” his predecessor. Yusuf had succeeded Abdullahi Ganduje, currently the national leader of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“A lot had been going wrong in the state but the Concerned Patriots of Nigeria had thought it best to allow Kano state to sort out its thorny issues,” Saleh said.
“Since being sworn into office, Governor Abba Yusuf has had a string of loutish acts that run like a hardened criminal’s rap sheet.
“This latest stunt of sacking five Emirs to install his acolyte was achieved by manipulating the Kano state house of assembly, which he had successfully turned into a rubber stamp for endorsing his illegal acts.
“They, alongside Governor Yusuf, have taken their desperation to an extent that could set the ancient city on fire and cause breaches in the land.
On Thursday, the Kano state house of assembly repealed an existing chieftaincy law, paving the way for Sanusi’s return to the throne four years after Ganduje deposed him. Governor Yusuf assented to the bill and, on Friday, reinstalled Sanusi as Emir of Kano.
