‘Presidency’s action prompted Abba Kyari’s release to NDLEA
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, reportedly got the presidency involved before Inspector-General of Police Usman Baba Alkali handed over rogue police officer Abba Kyari to the agency.
According to the Nation, Buba Marwa, the chairman of the anti-narcotics agency, had shown President Muhammdu Buhari the evidences linking Kyari to the drug cartel. Following, the President then ordered Kyari’s release to the NDLEA for investigation.
Femi Babafemi, the spokesperson for the NDLEA, also said at a news briefing that Kyari spurned invitation to him for days, leading the agency to declare him a wanted man.
“With the intelligence at our disposal, the Agency believes strongly that DCP Kyari is a member of a drug cartel that operates the Brazil-Ethiopia-Nigeria illicit drug pipeline, and he needs to answer questions that crop up in an ongoing drug case in which he is the principal actor. His failure to cooperate forced the hand of the Agency and that is the reason for this press briefing,” he said.
The NDLEA said Kyari tampered with evidence by selling 15kg out of 25kg of cocaine seized at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu,in Nigeria’s southeast.
Two international drug couriers, namely Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus ferried the drugs into the country. They have since been arrested.
Aside Kyari, other police officers arrested for their involvement in the cocaine saga are ACP Sunday J. Ubua, ASP Bawa James, Inspector Simon Agirgba, and Inspector John Nuhu.
Also in the custody of the NDLEA are the two international drug couriers Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus.
