Presidency explains Kano stoning incident during Buhari’s visit
The Nigerian presidency has denied the claim that some angry residents pelted President Muhammadu Buhari with stones while in Kano to commission some infrastructure.
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had issued a statement ostensibly sympathizing with President Buhari on the incident.
In its reaction, the PDP alleged All Progressives Congress presidential candidate Bola Tinubu and Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje masterminded the incident “to humiliate and harm President Buhari while performing his official duties in Kano.”
But, the presidency said the PDP gave a mere “divisive rhetoric” aimed at having an upper hand in the forthcoming presidential election.
It said, “The divisive rhetoric of an opposition in a futile attempt to malign the image of the President and the candidates of the All Progressives Congress in the coming elections, and its desperate wedge-driving activities to cause a division between the party and the government.”
The presidency said the stoning incident, rather, had occured due to a clash between the transport unions in the state.
It adds that the “stone-pelters as seen from the video in the fight against the traffic police were innocent children sponsored by politicians and terrorist sympathizers. There is no place for violence in a democracy,” the presidency declared.
