Tinubu saves PDP from self-inflicted disgrace after FCTA sealed party office

President Bola Tinubu intervened in the sealing of opposition Peoples Democratic Party’s national office in Abuja after the Federal Capital Territory Administration sealed it for failing to pay statutory ground rent. Until its ouster in 2015, the PDP was the ruling party for 16 years.

Apart from the PDP office, the FCTA also sealed one of the offices of the Federal Inland Revenue Service and other public and private establishments found to have defaulted. Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, ironically a member of the PDP, ordered the closure.

Reacting to the FCTA’s action, PDP acting national chairman Umar Damagum, called it “an attempt to undermine democracy” in the country. Damagum flayed the incumbent administration, describing the action as “reckless”.

He said: “We will not take this lightly. They could come and arrest all of us; we are prepared. This is a clear attempt to undermine democracy, and we will hold them accountable.

“If they are encouraging such actions, we do not take it lightly. They are attempting to undermine democracy, and this is completely unacceptable. This is a clear example of the irresponsibility exhibited by this government. We condemn this act in the strongest terms. It is a reckless display of irresponsibility, and we will not tolerate it.”

The FCTA, in a statement released on Monday evening, said it was giving the defaulters a fresh 14-day grace period, due to President Tinubu’s intervention.
