Rotimi Amaechi ‘a prominent politician’, says Tinubu in birthday tribute

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former Rivers State governor and, later, minister Rotimi Amaechi on attaining 60 years.

In his tribute released by State House press, President Tinubu says he “rejoices with Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, a prominent politician and former minister of transportation on his birthday on May 27.”

The President noted Amaechi’s “invaluable contributions to Rivers State as a former speaker and two-time governor”, saying “he dedicatedly served the state.”

Tinubu, in the statement, “prays for more years and God’s grace for the former minister and wishes him well in his political career.”

Cornet News reports that Amaechi, since losing the ruling All Progressives Congress presidential ticket to Tinubu in 2023, has emerged one of the incumbent administration’s fierce critics.

In February 2025, Amaechi had called for a protest against the government, owing to its economic policies many considered to have negatively affected the businesses and households.

Amaechi, again in April, nudged governors to stand up to President Tinubu while accusing the National Assembly of complacency.
