Read five reliefs by anti-Jonathan lawyer to stop him from running in 2027
Johnmary Chukwukasi Jideobi, a lawyer, has sought five reliefs from a federal judge, which aims at stopping former president Goodluck Jonathan from contesting 2027 presidential election.
Below are the reliefs:
According Jideobi, Jonathan, having stepped in to complete the term of then president Musa Yar’ Adua – after the latter died in office – can only be entitled to contest only once again. According to Section 137 (3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), “A person who was sworn-in as President to complete the term for which another person was elected shall not be elected to that office for more than a single term.”
Therefore, Jideobi, urges the court to do the following:
- Read Sections 1(1), (2) & (3) and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution to determine Jonathan’s eligibility for future contest. Upon doing so, the lawyer Jideobi asks the court to declare that Jonathan is ineligible.
- Jideobi wants the court to bar INEC and political parties from presenting the former president as its candidate for 2027 presidential race.
- The lawyer wants the court to restrain Jonathan from presenting himself for election.
- He equally wants the court to restrain INEC from accepting Jonathan’s name as presidential candidate of any political party.
- Jideobi is also asking the court to compel the Attorney-General of the Federation to ensure compliance with its decision and orders on the litigation.
