Akwa Ibom governor defends Channels TV eviction from Govt. House

Umo Eno, governor of Akwa Ibom, in Nigeria’s South-south region, has defended the recent eviction of Channels television reporters from the Government House.

The government axed the television station from its press crew following a recent leak whereby Governor Eno allegedly threatened to sack commissioners opposed to his defection plan to the All Progressives Congress.

The Akwa Ibom state government had not immediately reacted to the leak. Finally, Governor Eno has broken his silence on the issue, saying his chief press secretary took the action.

“I think it’s within the purview of the CPS to change correspondents within the Government House,” the governor said.

“It is practised all over the world. If you have served at a post for up to 10 years and the CPS decides to ask for a replacement, that is not a fight.
“It is within the prerogative of his office. The governor does not even have to know. So there is no problem. This afternoon, Channels is here beaming us live. We work with all media houses.”

The governor said that his administration see all media houses as valued partners and would work with them to achieve nation building.

Cornet News reports that specific governors in the opposition are aligned with the ruling party to ensure President Bola Tinubu’s return in 2027. Despite being a Peoples Democratic Party member, Governor Eno seemed enamoured of President Tinubu and he has declared support for his return.
