2027: What will happen to Jonathan if he contests against Tinubu  – Oshiomhole

Senator Adam Oshiomhole has said former president Goodluck Jonathan would face defeat, if he decides to join the 2027 presidential race against incumbent President Bola Tinubu. The PDP and some of its leaders have called on Jonathan to join the race but the former Nigerian leader has yet to confirm whether he would take the challenge.

While appearing on a television show on Monday, Oshiomhole said, “We will defeat him flatly if he comes out because now, the South-South is no longer PDP, so where is he going to start from?”

“How can Jonathan be a threat? We defeated him before, when PDP was truly PDP. If a man had a PDP at its best, at its peak, and he was defeated, I think only his enemy will push him to go into election,” Oshiomhole said.

“If I were able to advise him, I will say, Sir, maintain this status. You governed for eight years; you don’t have to govern for nine years.

“He has managed to demonstrate that out of power, you can be relevant and be at peace.”

Cornet News reports that Jonathan’s claim to fame began with his ascension to the governorship seat of Bayelsa after the impeachment of the governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha in December 2005. The late Alamieyeseigha was convicted for money laundering in Nigeria after he escaped arrest in the United Kingdom. Former president Olusegun Obasanjo would later tap Jonathan to be the running mate to former president, late Musa Yar’Adua. Yar’Adua’s death following protracted illness saw Jonathan, first, becoming the acting president and, later, president. Jonathan sought reelection in 2015 but lost to Muhammadu Buhari in a historic electoral loss by an incumbent. Jonathan’s decision to concede defeat made him a celebrated democracy hero locally and internationally.
