Police speak on arrest of Peter Obi’s supporter

The Nigeria Police have responded to the outcry over the arrest of one Chude Nnamdi Franklin. Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, had in his statement knocked the police for arresting Chude, who supported his presidential run.

Obi said that Chude’s arrest had confirmed to him “Nigeria’s poor and declining performance in the rule of law.”

However, the police, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said that a petitioner had accused Franklin of cyber stalking on social media. The action, as said, contravened Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015, and other criminal laws.

The statement added that had seen proofs that Franklin committed the offence.

The law enforcement, therefore, “urges members of the public to familiarize themselves with provisions of the law and be aware of the penalies for violating them, most especially, cybercrime laws with the new trends in the digital media space.”
