Police retirees getting N1.2m after 35 years service unacceptable – protesters
Protesting police retirees have revealed some of them got a paltry N1.2million as pension, after serving the Nigeria Police Force for 35 years.
The protesters are members of the Niger State chapter of the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria.
They are asking government to exclude the NPF from the contributory pension scheme under PenCom. The retirees marched to the Niger Police Command headquarters, where they delivered a protest letter for onward transmission to the Inspector General of Police.
Madu Dambuwa, the protest leader, lamented many among his colleagues had either died or injured while serving in the police force. He said children of some other police officers were driven away from school.
“Some of us got as low as N1.2 million at the end of our service. The IGP should listen to us and if they refused more of this kind of protest would come out.
“Our salary as police retirees is too poor compared to other security forces. Majority of us are earning like N38, 000 monthly while some other security forces gets over N100, 000 monthly as pension. Police gave birth to all other security forces and we should be treated equally”
“Pencom publication recently shows that pension fund has risen to N12. 8 trillion. This is evidently clear that the exit of Police cannot cripple Pencom claims.”
Shehu Abdullahi, a deputy commissioner of Police, received the letter from the protesters. He equally informed them that a legislation was in the works to address their challenges.
