Police, hoodlums in hourlong shootout

The police and some hoodlums have engaged in a hourlong shootout in the Aguluri community of Anambra State, southeast Nigeria.

The circumstances leading to the confrontation are not yet known. A report had claimed there were casualties from both the police and the gunmen, but the law enforcement said it is untrue.

Ikenga Tochukwu, a deputy superintendent and the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, identified the gunmen as cultists. He adds that operatives apprehended 15 of the said cult members.

“The situation has been brought under control on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng.

“The deputy commissioner of police in charge of operations led police operatives to the scene and prevented the youth from attacking the police station. We have made some arrests, in fact, over 15 people, and recovered some dangerous weapons.

“We have also intensified patrols in the area, aimed at enhancing peace and safety,” the PPRO said.
