PDP’s Dauda Lawal defeats Matawalle

Dauda Lawal, the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, has emerged the winner of the Zamfara State governorship election. Lawal, according to the electoral umpire, polled 377,726 votes to defeat incumbent Governor Bello Matawalle, who garnered 311,976 votes.

INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Kassimu Shehu, declared the results on Tuesday. Shehu said Lawal “satisfied the requirements of the law and he is declared winner and returned elected.”

Lawal’s victory comes four years after he lost the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress. He had contested the primaries alongiside other contestants, specifically Mukhtar Idris, who went on to win the governorship vote.

However, the Supreme Court in a ruling invalidated the victory of the APC in the governorship and house of assembly polls. Following the Court’s ruling, the INEC inaugurated Bello Matawalle, then governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party–and by reason of his being the first runner-up–became the governor. Matawalle later defected to the APC, while Lawal joined the PDP.

Lawal is a former banker and one of Reputation Poll’s 100 most influential Africans.
