Police officer on stop and search killed by gunmen

One unnamed police officer has been shot dead by masked criminals during an encounter at a police checkpoint in Obio/Akpo Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The Rivers Police Command said that the incident took place at the Eliozu flyover on Wednesday night.

Grace Iringe-Koko, who speaks for the command, stated that the criminals were travelling in a carton colour Sienna bus with fully tinted glasses at the time the  officers flagged them down.

The police, she said, returned fire and killed one of the masked men.

“The others managed to escape, potentially sustaining gunshot wounds.

“The Command has launched a thorough investigation into this despicable act and has already identified the group responsible,” she said.
