PDP candidate, supporters killed in Enugu attack

A Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Oforchukwu Egbon, alongside five of his supporters, was killed at Eke-Otu in Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday.

Egbon is vying for the Enugu North/South federal constituency seat. The attack by unknown gunmen comes in the wake of an earlier killing of a Labour Party senatorial candidate, Oyibo Chukwu.

Reacting to the incident, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, representing Enugu East senatorial district, said he is saddened by the attacks.

He said, “I am deeply saddened by yesterday (Wednesday) night’s news of the brutal attacks of PDP and Labour party members. These are honorable human beings and legitimate political actors whose untimely deaths are condemnable.”

He added, “I have repeatedly condemned the senseless murders and the arson of police and inec offices by unknown gunmen, and I have urged the people of the South East, to listen to reason in our fight for equality and fairness within the Nigerian federation. ”

Nigeria’s southeast region of Nigeria has been a hotbed for insurgency and separatist agitations. Criminal groups have carried out attacks on INEC offices, law enforcements, police stations, and private citizens.
