Police unaware of kidnapped undergraduates release – PRO

Rahman Nansel, spokesperson for Nigeria Police Force, Nasarawa State Command, has said that the law enforcement was unaware of the kidnapping and eventual release of eight undergraduates of the Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State.

Nansel, responding to the media request for comment on the release, reportedly said that the police lacked requisite information on the incident, because they did not receive an official complaint of the kidnap incident.

He stated, “The community did not inform the command when the incident happened. Up till this moment, nothing of such occurred. We have not received any report of the kidnapping.”

The students had spent five days in the captors’ den before their release.

Daily Trust, in its own report, said that Spencer Jerry, a community leader, said the released victims emerged at 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Abdullahi Mohammed, district head of Gandu community where the incident took place, urged the state government to conduct a probe and arrest perpetrators.

Abubakar Ibrahim, head of the university’s information unit, said the survivors were reunited with their families after undergoing medical examination and counselling. He promised the state government and the university would beef up security around student communities.
