Ortom says G-5 not supporting Atiku

Samuel Ortom, the Benue governor, said he was misreported as backing Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate Abubakar Atiku.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ortom through his aide Terver Akase, said he and four other governors still maintains their opposition to Atiku.

Ortom said the report of his endorsing Atiku is “false”, “mischievous” and targeted to embarrass him and his allies.

Akase explains that “when the Governor (Ortom) met with the expanded state caucus of PDP yesterday January 9, 2023 at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi, his message to them was crystal clear that the national leadership of PDP has failed to utilise its internal conflict resolution mechanism which has led to the crisis rocking the party.

“The Governor said during the meeting that if the crisis is not resolved before the elections, he would be left with no other option than to take a stand on the matter.”

Ortom, along side four other governors, is asking that the PDP national chairman Iyorchia Ayu step down from his position. The others are Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde, Rivers’ Nyesome Wike, Abia’s Ikpeazu Okezie, and Enugu’s Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

The governors said Ayu being a northerner like Atiku runs contrary to the PDP constitution on distribution of offices for fairness and balance.
