By Adeola Atanda

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the victory of its chairmanship candidate for Gwagwalada Area Council, Mohammed Kasim as a “significant blow” to the ruling All Progressives Congress and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

In a statement published on its social media accounts but created to its support group, the

Opposition Watch Nigeria (OWN), PDP said that Kasim’s win was ” a stunning political upset that has sent shockwaves through the Federal Capital Territory”.

The PDP said: “The victory is seen as a significant blow to the APC, particularly given the high-profile involvement of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. In the weeks leading up to the polls, Minister Nyesom Wike had led a widespread and aggressive campaign across the council, throwing the full weight of the FCT Administration behind the APC candidate, Yahaya Shehu.

“Despite the intense pressure and the Minister’s influential “pro-APC” stance, the electorate in Gwagwalada chose a different path, affirming their confidence in Mr. Kasim’s vision for community-led development and social welfare.”

The statement quotes the winner, Kasim as saying, “This is not just a victory for the PDP; it is a victory for every resident of Gwagwalada who stood their ground to choose progress over political imposition.”

He adds, “Our focus will remain on healthcare, women’s empowerment, and the educational advancement of our children.”

TheCornet reports that Kasim polled 22,165 votes to defeat his closest rival, Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who got 17,788 votes.
