Onaiyekan opposes Tinubu’s rejection of tribunal live telecast

Catholic Bishop John Onaiyekan has backed the call for a live telecast of presidential petition tribunal telecast.

His call apparently opposes the rejection of a live broadcast by president-elect Bola Tinubu’s legal team. Tinubu’s team, led by Wole Olaonipekun, had told the tribunal to jettison the request from a contender, Atiku Abubakar.

Onaiyekan, who is bishop emeritus of Abuja Catholic archdiocese, said: “It is in the interest of the judiciary to allow the live broadcast to be done.”

The clergyman said doing so would allow citizens follow the proceedings.

“It is in the interest of the judiciary to allow this thing to be done. All these issues that there are witnesses, whose witnesses are not meant to be made public, for goodness sake, what are they hiding? If you have anything that people shouldn’t know, you shouldn’t be saying it.”

Onaiyekan’s latest call reinforces his earlier opposition to Tinubu’s victory. He had recently said the president-elect should not be inaugurated until the tribunal disposes of the petitions challenging the poll outcome.
