Okupe steps aside from Peter Obi’s campaign

Dr. Doyin Okupe, who was convicted on Monday of money laundering charges, says he is stepping aside from the presidential campaign of Labour Party standard bearer Peter Obi.

Okupe, in his letter to Peter Obi, said: “You will recall I briefed you yesterday of my personal.travails in seeking justice and clearing my name using the Nigerian Legal System to pursue same.

“I have invested too much in your campaign to allow my personal travails become a source of distraction. In the circumstance, I am stepping aside and plead you appoint a new campaign DG who can continue the campaign with zero distraction”

Background

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, sentenced Okupe to two years imprisonment with an option of N500,000 fine for each of the counts.

The judge convicted him on two counts of failing to process through a financial institution the N702 million naira he received from former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki.

Okupe, according to an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) statement, failed to account for the money.

The anti-graft agency claimed that the funds were originally allocated to arms purchase but converted to a war chest by chieftains of the out of office Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

At the time of committing the crime, Okupe was  senior special assistant to former Nigerian leader Goodluck Jonathan.
