Ohaneze Ndigbo members split over Wike’s visit

The leadership of the Igbo cultural group, Ohaneze Ndigbo, appears divided over the visit by some of its leaders to Rivers state, Governor Nyesom Wike. In a press statement he issued last week, Ohaneze’s national publicity secretary, Alex Ogbonnia, said they visited Governor Wike to find out why the Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi lost in the state, according to results from the February 25th presidential election.

But, in a latest statement, Ohaneze’s secretary general, Ambassador Okey Emuchay, said that the body’s National Executive Committee did not authorise the visit.

Emuchay cited instances suggesting that Governor Wike ignored previous request by the body for a courtesy visit and failed to support it in burying its former leaders.

He said, “We had made efforts in the past to seek an audience with the Governor of Rivers State.” Emuchay added that Governor Wike also ignored their request for assistance when its deputy president-general, High Chief Kroham Joel passed on, despite his being a native of Ahoda West LGA of Rivers State where his remains was buried.

“I did not receive any response to that letter. Ohanaeze NEC was in Ahoda West local government to bury the late Deputy President General,” he added.
