Nigerian refugees in Benin had returned before we arrived there – FG

Nigerians, who sought refuge in neighboring Benin Republic, had returned to their communities by the time the emergency officials arrived the African country, the federal government said

Bolaji Akinremi, the director of consular department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the officials visited Agbon-Ojodu, Moro, Asa,  Ibeku and other villages in the Yewa Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The natives reportedly fled their homes due to incessant attacks by herdsmen who lead their cattle to graze on farmlands.

At least, 20 persons were alleged to have died from the attacks.

“Our mission visited the villages mentioned and met with rulers, but was told that those who came as a result of the crisis had returned after a few days”, said Akinremi.

“So, no Nigerian refugee was found in Benin Republic. In line with the various media reports and the reported National Assembly directive for NEMA to bring them back home, the MFA will be willing to support as appropriate.”

Nigeria has seen a spike in farmer-herders confrontations. Fulani herdsmen, some of who are believed to be foreigners, have been accused of perpetrating heinous crimes in the farming communities.
