The incident sparked a protest by angry students who decided the block the Aba-Owerri road, in Nigeria’s South-East region.

Prior to Nwachukwu’s trial, the police command, in a statement, had said it visited and obtained the victim’s testimony at the hospital she was admitted to.

“After visiting the victim at the hospital and obtaining information from her, an investigation was launched which led to the arrest of the suspect. The Commissioner of Police, CP Janet Agbede, being a woman and a mother has been on her toes with other officers in the command to douse the tension and to find out what actually happened,” said Geoffrey Ogbonna, the spokesperson for Abia Police Command.

Until his arrest, the indicted police corporal was attached to the Rapid Response Squad Aba (RRS).
