The Federal Government of Nigeria’s Committee on Consequential Adjustments in Salaries has said the new minimum wage of N70, 000 for public workers will take effect from July 29, 2024. This is contained in a Memorandum of Understanding the committee issued on Friday.
It reads, “The NSIWC will generate the appropriate salary templates for other consolidated salary structures for implementation; the effective date of the implementation shall be July 29, 2024.”
President Bola Tinubu and the organized labour had agreed on the new national wage on July 11, 2024. The President also promised to assist private sector employers and state governments in paying the new worker’s wage. The Nigerian Government upped the minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000. However, the approved wage was far below the over ₦200, 000 the Nigerian Labour Congress and its counterpart, the Trade Union Congress had asked for.
