Kano govt. speaks on rumoured plan to reinstall Sanusi as emir

The Kano state government has responded to the rumour that it is planning to reinstall deposed former emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

TheCornet reports that the rumour swirled around the ancient city after pictures of the former Kano emir adorning the ‘coronation hall’ surfaced on social media.

The hall is currently under renovation.

In his clarification on the issue, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the spokesperson for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, explained that the pictures are historical.

He said, “The history of the Coronation Hall is synonymous to the 14th Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi, because it was built for his presentation of staff of office after he was crowned as the emir succeeding late Alhaji Ado Bayero in 2014 during the administration of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

“So, traditionally, his picture shall remain there forever. Bringing back the picture of the 14th emir is part of the ongoing rehabilitation to give the Coronation Hall a face lift.”

The former administration of Abdullahi Ganduje deposed Sanusi in March 2020 and went on to bifurcate the Kano emirate into four kingdoms.

The government, in statement it issued then, accused Sanusi of disrespect

The statement read, “The Emir of Kano is in total disrespect to lawful instructions from the office of the state Governor and other lawful authorities, including his persistent refusal to attend official meetings and programmes organized by the Government without any lawful justification which amount to total insubordination.

“It is on record and in so many instances Malam Muhammad Sunusi II has been found breaching part 3 section 13 (a e) of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019 and which if left unchecked will destroy the good and established image of the Kano Emirate.

“This removal is made after due consultation with the relevant stakeholders and in compliance with part 3 section 13 of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019 and other reasons stated above.
